A Beginner's Guide to Planning the Perfect Wedding! (10 tips)

13 November 2023

Planning a wedding is a thrilling and joyous experience, but it can also be overwhelming for beginners. With so many details to consider and decisions to make, it's easy to feel lost in the sea of options.

FEAR NOT! This beginner's guide is here to help you navigate the EXCITING journey of planning your perfect wedding.

It doesn’t need to be stressful, you can make it just as exciting as the day itself!

a beginners guide 1
Define Your Vision: Before diving headfirst into the details, take some time to envision your dream wedding… What do you want the overall vibe to be? Rustic and intimate, or modern and grand? Some people find it useful to make a vision board to see in full view the style and vibe of their vision.

My Top Tip would be to just start! Even if you know the colour palette for the day, great! That’s one thing you can add that can then give you inspiration for the next idea!

Set a Budget: Establishing a budget is crucial. You want to determine how much you're willing to spend overall and allocate funds to different aspects like venue, catering, attire, and decorations. Again, you can create a BUDGET BOARD just like the mood board to clearly see the amounts you will spend on each aspect of the day. My Top Tip would be to be realistic and leave some wiggle room for unexpected expenses.

Create a Timeline: Planning a wedding takes time! Having a timeline that will keep you organised really helps! My Top Tip would be to set a wedding date, then work backwards to establish deadlines for tasks such as booking vendors, sending invitations, and finalising details. This will help you stay on track and avoid last-minute stress.

Choose a Venue: The venue sets the tone for your wedding. Decide whether you want an indoor or outdoor setting, and consider factors like capacity, location, and amenities. My Top Tip would be to get looking early on and to book the venue well in advance to secure your desired date. This avoids future disappointment.

Assemble Your Team: Surround yourself with a RELIABLE TEAM. Yes, I did say team. The people you choose to include on your special day should work together cohesively to ensure the day goes as smoothly as possible and as close to your desired vision. Vendors such as photographers, caterers, wedding planners, room dressers and florists play crucial roles in bringing your vision to life. My Top Tip is to research well and choose professionals who align with your style and budget and who can work together favourably.

Select the Perfect Attire: Finding the right wedding attire is a memorable part of the planning process. Start shopping early for your wedding dress or suit and consider the theme and formality of your wedding. I’m sure this is a tip I don’t need to preach to all the brides out there as this is (usually) the most exciting part of the whole wedding process. Am I right? My Top Tip is to not neglect thinking about the accessories and to book in for alterations in a decent amount of time.

a beginners guide 3
Create Your Guest List: Sit down with your partner and compile a guest list. Be mindful of your budget and venue capacity. Remember that the guest list can impact other aspects of your wedding, such as catering costs and seating arrangements. My Top Tip is to set a guest list suitable for your budget.

You can also throw a separate party to celebrate your love another time if you cannot afford many guests.

Send Invitations: Once you have your guest list finalised, send out invitations well in advance. Include important details like the date, time, location, and RSVP information. My Top Tip would be to consider creating an online event on social media for additional details and updates. However, be mindful that the group is open to all to comment and post which can be distracting.

Plan the Ceremony and Reception: Work with your officiant/ celebrant to plan a meaningful ceremony. Coordinate with your venue and vendors to design the layout for the reception, including seating arrangements, decorations, and entertainment. My Top Tip is to get to know the people who are orchestrating your wedding. The more you connect the more you will feel comfortable and happy you are in safe hands for your wedding.

a beginners guide 4
Capture the Memories: Hire a professional photographer and videographer to capture the special moments of your big day. AKA me! These memories will last a lifetime, so invest in quality professionals who can tell your unique love story through their lens.

My Top Tip would be to choose someone who you can tell will capture your unique story through images. Every videographer and photographer is different with a different personality and style. Take time to get to know your photographer as they will be around you all day long!

A last note from me: Embarking on the journey of planning your perfect wedding may seem daunting, but with careful planning and organisation, it can be a truly enjoyable experience.

Remember to stay true to your vision, enlist the help of a supportive team, and cherish the moments along the way. Your dream wedding is within reach, and this guide is here to help you make it a reality.

Happy planning!
