Don’t Let It Fade! – A Fable

Let me tell you a story about a woman, called Susan, who kept her memories in a box, away from sunlight and heat and always took care of her photos. Do you think you know how this story will end?
Susan had always cherished her photos and thought about them as part of her. They are reflections of her own life looking back at her reminding her of the person she once was and who she is today.
‘I had a blast at that fair that one year’ - Susan said out loud to herself as she marvelled at her younger self.
‘Look at my hair! It looks so bright and airy,’ - Susan spoke with surprise,
‘I can’t remember it being like that! I never really liked my hair at the time, I was always fussing over it.’
Her partner picked up on her voice echoing from the other room and wondered over to see why she was nattering away to herself.
‘What have you got there, Susan? - He questioned.
‘It’s my memory album from our youth days.’ - She lovingly answered.
‘Ah! I’m so glad you kept this! Can I have a look with you? - He asked.
‘Of course you can!’ - She answered delighted.
The pair settled themselves down to fondly flick through the photos but it wasn’t long before Susan noticed that she had left out a date on one of the pictures.
‘Oh no! There’s no date on his one and I can’t remember what month or year it was!’ -Susan sobbed.
‘Don’t worry Darling, the main thing is that you have the photo and that you remember being there at the time! I remember this moment well, you were laughing this whole holiday and won me a prize at the fair.’ -He explained.
‘Yes! That’s true! I guess it doesn’t matter but it’s just nice to use the date to remember a time in your life, thank god I’ve got you!’ - She laughed.
As Susan and her partner made their way through all the lovely memories they turned to a page which had a gold ring sitting on the photo! She wondered how it got there and soon remembered she had glued it to the paper above the picture as a keepsake.
Her partner had given her the ring for her birthday. At the time she possessed many other rings and was so scared of losing it that she thought best to put it in her album.
‘What’s that in the picture?’- Her partner asked.
‘I’m not too sure, it just looks black!’ - He responded.
They soon realised that the ring had caused the photo to turn black due to it falling apart from the glue and landing on the picture.
‘I’ve just googled it and it says that magnetic items can ruin pictures so it is best to keep them away from photos to prevent damage.’ - She informed him.
‘I’m so sad it’s ruined’ - she cried.
‘It’s not a big issue my love, none of the other pictures has turned bad and this picture still has most of Its colour and you can see our faces.’ - He reassured her.
Her partner continued to make her feel better as he reminded her of her meticulous talent when it comes to looking after special items….
‘You have always kept this album in a safe place and away from the sun, which can damage the photos. You have also ALWAYS handled it with care and used gloves when touching the album.’ - He said.
‘I guess the paper has kept well too! I think at the time I bought acid-free paper? That must have helped it stay nice,’ - she wondered.
He could tell she started to feel better and could carry on rejoicing in the fond memories made. They spent a long time looking over the album until it was time for bed.
Susan put the book back in her safe cool space and tucked herself in for the night ready to dream of the memories she had reminded herself of.
After a lovely night's sleep, she woke to the thought of that one picture that was slightly ruined by the ring.
‘If we had a backup book then maybe we could have had the full true picture today.’
She decided from that point that she would make a digital copy of the book in case anything happened in the future whereby the pictures would be ruined or completely gone.
So she got to work making her new album online by taking photos of her photos and uploading them to be printed.
‘I’m so happy we have done this’ - she said to her partner, ‘Now I feel better knowing we can make these memories last forever.’
The End x
